World Kindness Day 2022

What an incredible power we have,
to walk through the world, making somebody’s day.

Krista Tippett

Dance for Kindness is a world-wide event that is part of World Kindness Day, an international holiday that was introduced as a day of observation by the World Kindness Movement (WKM) in 1998.

We love this celebration of kindness through uplifting music and dance. It provides an opportunity for young people to participate in an event that promotes kindness. The dance event is organized every year by Orly Wahba of Life Vest Inside.

Orly has created a powerful kindness network that fosters dialog and promotes kindness as a transformative way of life. As a result, the participating schools and other organizations have seen positive changes in the way that young people engage with one another.

The World Kindness Movement, a not-for-profit organization with no political, commercial or religious affiliations, was created by organizations from several countries “to highlight good deeds in the community, focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us.” Active since 1998, the organization was registered as an official non-governmental organization (NGO) under Swiss law in 2019.

World Kindness Day is observed in over 50 countries, on six continents. Dance for Kindness is the highlight of the day, providing a fun opportunity for people around the world to focus on the importance of kindness to bring people together and to stimulate collaboration between different countries.

Participants all learn the dance of the year, and videos from each location are combined to show them all performing simultaneously to the same music – in a kindness FreezeFrame, followed by the dance. Last year’s event took place in over 120 cities in 50 countries with over 20,000 participants.

Orly says “The purpose of World Kindness Day is to look beyond ourselves – beyond the boundaries of our country, beyond our culture, our race, our religion, and to realize that we are citizens of the world, and that kindness is the common thread that unites us all.”

Young people from so many diverse cultures coming together in celebration of kindness always uplifts us and reminds us that our world values kindness.

We can all celebrate kindness every day, by looking for opportunities to be kind, thereby inspiring others to do the same. Every small act of kindness makes a difference – a smile, a kind word, opening a door, helping someone reach an item on a top shelf.

Little things.

It’s not the size of the action that matters but what it says: “I see you and I care about you.” That cannot be measured, but the message is received.

The more we practice kindness, the more our lives become a celebration.

Enjoy the journey.

  1. I am very grateful knowing about this organization and wanted to know how to join in the kindness dance??? So I will dance at home and consider that I joined this wonderful world movement born and growing in kindness.
Thanks for introducing me and your readers to yet another way to express our kindness and to see how so many groups in countless countries are with us. I try consciously to practice kindness every day and it creates good feelings all the time!

Last night I had the privilege to see the documentary on Pete Seeger. (it is terrific- I highly encourage every one to see and honor the memory of what he accomplished through his songs and his calls for freedom for all people everywhere. Here are two examples of how he inspired us through song and music and his rebelliously effective acts of justice and peace.
“Normally I’m against big things. I think the world is going to be saved by millions of small things. Too many things can go wrong when they get big.” — Pete (on how he felt about attending his big 90th birthday bash- he lived to be 94 ).
And another example is his relentless working to overcome racism, classism, sexism, and imperialism; he believed that sharing is better than exploiting; kindness better than callousness.
Love to you, Pat and Larry!

    • Thank you, Maxine. We also enjoy the Dance for Kindness – seeing so many young people putting their hearts into the dance. Every year, they have a new song and dance. Anyone and any organization can volunteer to lead a group for next year’s dance. Orly’s staff then send out all the music, dance video and instructions to use in training your group – big or small. Size doesn’t matter.

Thanks for the quotes from Pete Seeger and mentioning the documentary. He certainly had an impact on our country, at a time when it was needed.
      Love to you, Maxine!

    • Thanks, Maggie. I agree.
When young people realize that kindness is fun, they embrace it as a way of life.
I love the idea of “Playing it forward.”
