Love is a Powerful Force in the World

Your task is not to seek love, but merely to seek and find
all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.

The subject of love intrigues me. Many articles or videos come to my attention every week, and I am easily pulled in.

Last week, an interesting article left me pondering the question: “What is the opposite of love?”

Does Love Have an Opposite?

We, in our world of duality, seem to need to place things neatly in relation to one another, either like or unlike, the same or opposite. Of course, in our complex world, most things, ideas or feelings do not have an opposite. But let’s think about an opposite of Love.

Many people consider Hate to be Love’s opposite. Others say that it is Fear. In her article, “Mighty in Contradiction,” Patty de Llosa wrote:

“In my understanding the opposite of love is power. Love accepts and embraces. Power refuses and crushes opposition. Love is kind and knows how to forgive. Power is competitive and takes others into account only when it stands in the Winner's Circle.”

This is a good accounting of Love’s qualities, but it seems terribly unfair to Power. I believe that Power is neutral. It can be used for good or evil. I believe that Love is a Power and can be a strong counterforce to Power that is used for any purpose that takes from others for selfish reasons.

What Would Love’s Opposite Be?

So, that brings me back to the interesting question: If Love has an opposite, in our three-dimensional world, what would it be? I asked our friend Michael, and his answer was the one that makes the most sense to me.

Indifference.

How often do we or others completely ignore people we pass, without even acknowledging that they exist? How often do we hear about people who are suffering from injustice or facing life threatening challenges, and we don’t give them a thought. We don’t hate them or fear them. Those responses require us to see them, to be aware of them as fellow humans.

When we are indifferent, we wipe them out of our awareness. Is that Love’s opposite? It’s the closest I have heard. But this is all just a semantic exercise.

I do not believe that Love has an opposite.

I believe that Love is the unifying principle of all life. It is that from which all things and all of us emerged, and I believe that it is an innate impulse in all living things.

Of course, in this three-dimensional world, our ego minds have the ability to override our natural inclination to come together and to live in harmony with one another. That’s part of the wonderful, scary, uplifting, challenging, rewarding dance that we all get to experience in this world.

I believe that we are never separated from Love. It is our true essence and our deepest impulse. This idea is expressed beautifully by Daniel Nahmod in his song, One Power. Daniel’s message is that whatever names we give to the God or other power that we recognize in our lives, they are all expressions of the One Power.

There’s One Power, invisible
And you see it everywhere and every day
One Power, indescribable
And you speak of it with every word you say
Mysterious, until you know the truth
As simple as the love inside of you.

Whatever name you give it
it's all One Power, can’t you see
It’s the power of the love in you and me.

How Do We Access This Power?

Most of us have an inner yearning to live lives of love and belonging and joy. As we learn to express the love that is within us, acknowledged or unseen, we develop our personal power to live the lives that we long for.

No matter how many challenges we face in today’s world, I believe that Love is the most effective antidote to counter the forces of hate, fear, greed and indifference that seem to have taken over the world.

Love doesn’t get much press, but throughout the world, more and more, people are choosing Love as a way of life. It is a grass roots global movement, and it is vibrant and growing under the radar.

You are already a part of this powerful force for good.

Thank you for being a shining light that brightens the way for others.

We wish you love and joy on your journey.
